“Looper”: the science behind the end of Rian Johnson time-travel thriller

“Looper”, together with “Brick” for many as Rian Johnson best film – especially after the controversial nature “Star Wars 8: The last Jedi.” At the same time the Sci-Fi Trhiller is also his most complicated work. We declare the end.

Rian Johnson, “Looper” with its multiple timelines and its own legal time travel logic a tricky matter. We provide you a brief and unadorned declaration of the end, that may seem a bit confused in the film itself well, especially when you look at (tonight at 23.05 on Pro Sieben) looks at him with distracting commercial breaks on free TV.

This action leads to the end of “Looper”

Timeline 1: The young Joe (Joseph Gordon-Levitt) kills the returned in time old Joe (Bruce Willis) according to plan, leaves for Shanghai and ages on the side of his new love, until he matures to the old Joe. As the rainmaker incited his henchmen on him, he can sit successfully defended, but is forced to watch as his wife is shot.

Timeline 1:

Timeline 2: After Plugging into the past / present old Joe can surprise the young Joe and takes flight. His plan: to make all 3 identify children who can potentially grow into a rainmaker in order to thwart his wife’s death. The young Joe – because of a mishap in the crosshairs of Looper organization – quartered in Sara (Emily Blunt), the mother of one of the three boys, and waits for his old self. In between, he notes: The small Cid has incomparably strong telekinetic abilities and is therefore most likely the sought from the old Joe candidate who will become the rainmaker.

Time Line 2:

This means the end

When the old Joe shows up on the farm, recognizes the young Joe, that this Cids kill mother and the child is thus traumatize final. As a result, Cid would become a rainmaker. The old Joe would itself become the cause of the death of his wife.

The young Joe sees only one way out of the precarious predicament. He kills himself then disappears old Joe before Sara comes to death and Cid is an orphan.

The hope: So growing Cid guarded on the side of his mother and does not become a rainmaker at best.

A very different question is, incidentally, how coherent is the logical structure of Looper or whether the characters of the film even time travel logic of their world completely see through (at least the old Joe has this claim, however, not at all). Also, what are the motives of the rainmaker, may be puzzled long. Is he not a villain, but someone who takes the necessary evil to himself and the whole loop closes for good reasons? Finally, the forbidden time jumps are exclusively carried out by criminal organizations to commit murder without trouble. In addition, the network is full of theories that locate the identity of the rainmaker not at Cid, but other characters of the film.

However, for these and similar questions it would take a separate article. And of course it is just what the allure of time travel movies with mind: possible plot holes and narrative spaces that invite you to Toss and let smoke head.
