The American Space Agency has published new footage on its YouTube channel. In the animation we can see the most important part of the Mars 2020 mission, namely the moment the device lands on Mars. On board the lander, which has been heading towards this planet since July this year, there was a large rover and the first drone in history.
The moment of landing will be very dangerous, due to the very thin atmosphere of the planet, which by itself will not slow down the lander. Therefore, at the beginning the device will release one parachute, which will gently brake it, and then the other. When the lander is close to the surface, special rocket engines will fire. Their task will be to finally brake the vehicle and put it safely on the surface.
If this part of the mission goes perfectly, a new era in exploring the Red Planet will begin. The Perseverance rover and Ingenuity drone will look for signs of life in an area where there was once a huge body of water, where biological life may have flourished. This is the delta region of the Jezero Crater, which is located on the edge of Isidis Planitia, a giant basin north of the planet's equator. Scientists chose this area because of the oldest and most interesting geological forms of the Red Planet there.
The most important part of Mars exploration will be drilling into the ground and taking rock samples. After that, they will be tightly packed and can be picked up by future missions and then delivered to Earth for more in-depth study. Interestingly, the Polish Space Agency will take part in this risky undertaking.
The landing of the rover and drone on the surface of Mars will take place on February 18 next year. NASA will then have at its disposal as many as three different exploring robots on Mars. In addition to the Mars 2020 mission, a spacecraft and rover from China and an orbiter from the United Arab Emirates will also appear on this mysterious globe.
